At ten that evening, Natalie lay in her bed wide-awake. She had expected Philip not to answer her call. But he did.
“I want you to know,” Natalie said, turning onto her side as soon as he picked up the phone. She pulled one of her pillows from her face and held it between her legs. “I want you to know that I’ve been thinking about everything.”
“Yep,” he replied.
Natalie grimaced. She was talking to Nonchalant Philip. She hated that Philip more than any of his other personas.
She heaved a sigh, the kind of sigh that came off like a growl. “Look, if you’re going to go all diva on me, I’m not going to talk to you, Philip.”
“Suit yourself,” he returned.
He was silent, and she had at first believed that he had hung up. But the light of her cell phone still shone bright. Okay, well, this meant that they would ride a long wave of silence, waiting for the other to break it. She knew he wouldn’t. He preferred silence anyway. He might even fall asleep, if she didn’t speak up.
“Anyway,” she went on, “I just wanted you to know that the phone bill is due. You owe half of it.”
“I can pay the whole thing.”
“Don’t be a pompous jerk. You only owe half of it, Philip.”
“I’ve always paid the whole thing, Natalie. It’s no big deal.”
She refrained from calling him a fucking bastard, realizing that he wasn’t hers to call that anymore. And maybe he’d never be hers again if she did call him that. So, she would be mute for now. In the dark, she reached for the perfect glass of red wine on her nightstand and licked her lips. She held the glass near the phone.
Philip finally spoke. “It’s no big deal, Natalie. Especially since this’ll be the last time we’ll have to do this. I can pay the early termination fee too. Nothing big.”
Had he thought so far as the early termination fee? Had he not considered their own early termination?
“Yeah, well, since you’re going to do that,” Natalie said, “you may as well take care of the other arrangements for your departure. You have a ton of shit here, and I was going to re-decorate soon, so I really need you to get it. Otherwise, I’m going to throw it out.”
“Departure, Natalie?” he asked with a simple laugh. “Why do you have to be so morbid about everything. No need to get cranky. It’s only a couple of things, right?”
Actually, it was four things. There were the pair of huge brown house shoes that were coming apart at the soles—the ones he refused to get rid of because…oh, one of the many nostalgic reasons that he kept all of the things his family bought or made him.
He’d also left a game of Scrabble. Every time they had played, he'd made naughty words with his letters just to make her laugh.
Since when did clitoris begin with a 'k,' Gise?
Since you used the last 'c' in the game.
